Meet Peter Njofu Namasaka from Kenya!

What has been your most memorable cultural experience so far?

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with my students at The Children's Guild School in Prince George's County in Maryland, stands out as one of my favourite cultural events so far. My students liked the rich customs of Uruguay when we decided to focus on them. We performed the Candombe dance and made a typical Uruguayan sandwich called Chivito. My student’s excitement for learning about Uruguayan culture as well as how they related it to their personal experiences thrilled me. This occasion showed how effective cultural interaction is at promoting harmony and understanding in the classroom.

What has been your favorite part about living in the US?

I have had the extraordinary opportunity to witness up close a melting pot of cultures since moving to the United States. The variety I encounter every day, both at school and in the greater community, is my favourite asset. My stay has become more meaningful as a result of meeting people from different backgrounds and learning about their stories. It has been an intriguing and fulfilling experience since people are ready to learn about different cultures, especially my Kenyan heritage.

What has been the most challenging?

Since I teach a class of middle school students with emotional disabilities, adapting to their special needs has been the most difficult aspect of my job. It has taken time and creativity towards figuring out their unique learning styles besides creating strategies to support their emotional health. However ,these difficulties have helped me to develop as a teacher and have given me a great sense of satisfaction to watch my students succeed.

Do you have tips for your fellow J-1 teachers?

I would tell other J-1 teachers to continue being adaptable and receptive. There will be new obstacles for them to overcome in the classroom and when adjusting to life abroad, but each obstacle is a chance for improvement. It can establish a profound and significant bond if you take the time to introduce students to their culture. They should not forget to take in knowledge about other people’s cultures and experiences from their students and colleagues.

What has been your student's favorite cultural exchange activity so far?

My students thoroughly enjoyed learning about Kenyan culture through the videos that I shared with them. The distinctive school programmes, local cooking as well as exciting clothing notably caught their attention. They were eager to compare our daily schedules and teaching approaches, which was amazing to observe. Their renewed interest and engagement after this discussion demonstrates how effective cultural learning can be in promoting understanding and appreciation in the classroom.
