What has been your most memorable cultural experience so far?
I've had many incredible experiences that I'll cherish for the rest of my life. If I had to pick one, travelling from Virginia to California on my first road trip last summer stands out as my most memorable cultural experience thus far. I had the opportunity to go to many different states to visit tourist attractions and historical places.
What has been your favorite part about living in the US?
Working as a J-1 teacher at my current host school is my favorite part of being in the United States. I am delighted to be a part of such a wonderful and diverse community that has made me feel welcome from the moment I arrived. Throughout my stay here, every staff member has been kind and supportive.
What has been the most challenging?
The most challenging part of my experience is being away from my family and starting a new life in the US alone. I have faced many challenges and obstacles that helped me grow in so many ways.
Do you have tips for your fellow J-1 teachers?
I advise my fellow J-1 teachers to give themselves some grace. Living and teaching in a foreign country requires a great deal of bravery, determination, and devotion. Enjoy and appreciate every minute of this experience, and always trust the process. Challenges help you grow and become the best version of yourself. Learn how to rest when you get tired and take care of yourself (mentally and physically).
What has been your student's favorite cultural exchange activity so far?
My students enjoy learning about Bahrain and its culture. I've introduced a few traditional Bahraini games. In addition, I taught them the "Happy Birthday" song in Arabic. My students' favorite cultural exchange activity was celebrating Bahrain's Independence Day on December 16th. I dressed in traditional Bahraini clothing and jewelry and gave a presentation about Bahrain's history, food, and culture! The children enthusiastically loved the presentation, especially when I did a traditional dance and invited them to participate.
