Meet Cristine Legaspi and her co-J1 teachers from the Philippines

What has been your most memorable cultural experience so far?

The most memorable aspect of our experience as a J1 teacher was immersing ourselves in the rich tapestry of American education. We had the privilege of learning an abundance of new things: from the diverse cultural nuances that shape the educational landscape to innovative teaching strategies that truly transformed our approach in the classroom.

What has been your favorite part about living in the US?

One of the most rewarding aspects of our tenure as a J1 teacher was the opportunity to cultivate meaningful relationships with colleagues and friends who, over time, became an integral part of our extended family. Additionally, traveling to diverse states across America allowed me to explore various educational landscapes and foster camaraderie through shared laughter and the creation of enduring memories. From heartfelt conversations to shared laughter and unforgettable adventures, traversing various states in the United States was not just about sightseeing but weaving together a tapestry of cherished memories and enduring bonds. We discovered hope in our collective journey, each of us serving as a beacon of encouragement and support, striving to elevate one another in our roles as educators. Together, we cultivated professionalism, nurtured passion, and upheld ethical standards, inspiring continuous growth and fostering a community dedicated to excellence.

What has been the most challenging?

As a J1 teacher, one of the foremost challenges we encounter revolves around managing the profound sense of isolation that accompanies separation from our family. Observing our sons and daughters mature in our absence amplifies this challenge. Furthermore, the inability to participate in pivotal family occasions compounds the emotional strain. Additionally, navigating the conflicting time zones when communicating with family members in the Philippines further exacerbates these difficulties. In facing these formidable hurdles, we possess the resilience to transform them into sources of strength and motivation. Our journey spanning five years stands as a testament to this resilience, illustrating that overcoming such challenges is within our grasp.

Do you have tips for your fellow J-1 teachers?

It's crucial to recognize that in this journey, we are not solitary travelers; rather, we stand united, drawing inspiration from one another. Our dedication to our craft, fueled not only by familial ties but also by our profound passion for teaching, propels us forward. Let us honor the sacrifices made by our families by maximizing the opportunities before us, ensuring that their efforts are not in vain. Together, let us strive, excel, and reach new heights.

I Cristine Legaspi together with Kristel Dale Blanco, Almira Gay Sadaya, Mary Rose Saycon, Lyndon Saycon, Crizelle Amante, Joseph Amante, and Jayson Luniza express our profound gratitude for the enriching experiences garnered during our tenure in the United States of America, particularly within the esteemed host school and Tucson Unified School District. Our heartfelt appreciation extends to our colleagues, whose collaboration and support have been invaluable on this journey. Furthermore, we are deeply thankful for the enduring friendships cultivated during our time abroad.

In reflecting on our time in the United States, we are filled with appreciation for the opportunities and relationships formed along the way. These experiences have enriched our professional lives and contributed to our personal growth and understanding.
