Firstcoast News Teacher of the Week: Jumar Birao
Meet Jumar Birao from the Philippines
Jumar shared the following insights on classroom management:
'One of the most challenging aspects as an exchange teacher was my first year and it was classroom management. I struggled to handle misbehaving students and maintain a positive and productive learning environment. It was tough to balance the needs of all students, manage my time effectively, and ensure that everyone was on the same page. However, I didn't give up! I took the initiative to develop my own structure and procedures for my classroom. I created a set of rules and expectations that were clear and consistent, and I worked to establish a positive and respectful atmosphere. I also made sure to communicate regularly with my students, parents, and colleagues to keep everyone informed and on the same page. As a result, my classroom management improved significantly over time. My students became more engaged and motivated, and we were able to achieve great results. In fact, during my first year, I was able to increase our school's math test scores from 78% to 85% among 7th-grade students. This achievement was a source of great pride for me and for our school. But what's even more remarkable is that our school administration took notice of my efforts and asked me to share my strategies with other teachers. They invited me to have new teachers observe my classroom to learn from my experiences and get inspiration for their own teaching practices.'
