Meet Chablefac Forchap from Cameroon

What has been your most memorable cultural experience so far?

My most memorable cultural experience so far has been participating in a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. It was heartwarming to experience the sense of community and gratitude that this holiday brings. Sharing a meal with American families gave me a deeper understanding of their values and traditions, and I felt truly welcomed.

What has been your favorite part about living in the US?

The diversity of the people and the landscapes has been my favorite part of living in the US. From vibrant cities to breathtaking national parks, I’ve been able to explore so many unique places. Meeting people from different backgrounds and learning about their cultures has made my time here rich with new perspectives.

What has been the most challenging?

The most challenging part has been adapting to the different educational systems and expectations. However, I’ve found that this challenge has helped me grow as an educator. I’ve had to be flexible and open-minded, which has only strengthened my teaching abilities.

Do you have tips for your fellow J-1 teachers?

For fellow J-1 teachers, my biggest tip is to embrace every opportunity for cultural exchange, both inside and outside of the classroom. Engage with your local community, learn from your students, and don’t be afraid to share your own culture. It’s through these moments that you and your students will grow.

What has been your student's favorite cultural exchange activity so far?

The students' favorite cultural exchange activity was undoubtedly the period when I shared my country's traditions. They were amazed by how rich and diverse my culture is, and their excitement was palpable. They especially enjoyed the videos I shared of our dressing and ceremonies, which highlight the vibrant clothing and intricate details. Additionally, they were fascinated by the various rites and rituals that are part of our cultural heritage. It was a deeply engaging experience for them, and it sparked many questions and discussions about cultural diversity and traditions.
