Meet Tamar Mota from Germany

What has been your most memorable cultural experience so far?

One of the standout moments during my time in the J-1 Cultural Exchange Program was the opportunity to explore the Bay Area extensively. From the picturesque town of Sausalito, with its charming waterfront, to the breathtaking shores of Santa Cruz, each place had its unique charm. While savoring Clam chowder at a local seafood restaurant, I had the pleasure of engaging with the friendly folks who embodied the spirit of community. These interactions were more than just conversations, they were glimpses into the heart and soul of the Bay Area. Another enriching aspect was delving into the history of the cities where I live and work, Oakland and San Francisco. A fellow teacher, a history teacher, shared profound insights into the rich tapestry of San Francisco’s past while leading a walking tour for people interested in the history of San Francisco and the Bay. Learning about the social movements that were born here and their remarkable stories was nothing short of inspiring. Moreover, the students I have the privilege of teaching became my greatest teachers. Their curiosity, creativity, and innovative thinking left a lasting imprint on my heart. The journey has been a continuous series of special encounters and lessons from locals who generously shared the essence of the Bay Area’s spirit.

What has been your favorite part about living in the US?

One of the most enchanting aspects of living in the United States has been the openness and willingness of people to share their life experiences, philosophies, and stories. In stark contrast to my experiences in Germany, where people can be more reserved, the US offered an environment where rich and meaningful conversations flowed effortlessly. The depth of these interactions was particularly evident in unexpected places—chatting with Uber drivers from diverse backgrounds or striking up conversations with elderly individuals at parks and community gardens. It’s in these moments that I discovered the true beauty of diversity, where every person, irrespective of their background, had a unique and captivating story to tell. These conversations challenged my perspectives and broadened my horizons.

What has been the most challenging?

The most challenging part of this adventure was undoubtedly adapting to a new country, a new workplace, and a new environment. Change, as they say, can be daunting. However, I was fortunate to receive unwavering support from the Intrax team, my school, and my colleagues. The welcoming nature of the local community also played a significant role in making this transition smoother.

It’s worth noting that the language barrier, which can be intimidating initially, can be effortlessly overcome with patience and an open heart. My time here has taught me that challenges are but opportunities for growth, and with the right support and attitude, one can navigate even the most unfamiliar terrain.

Do you have tips for your fellow J-1 teachers?

To my fellow J-1 teachers embarking on this remarkable journey, I would like to share some hopefully useful advice: First, Be open to new methods of teaching, living, and learning. The richness of this experience lies in embracing the unfamiliar.

Second, don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed. The Intrax team is committed to your success and will go above and beyond to assist you. Third, prepare yourself diligently before arriving, but be prepared for outcomes that may differ from your expectations. Flexibility is key to making the most of this adventure. And last but not least, remember that the true reward of this experience is not only the professional and cultural growth but also the discovery of a whole new version of yourself.

Beyond the individual experiences, one of the most significant highlights of my time in the US was being able to share this incredible journey with my husband. Together, we embarked on a transformative adventure that opened our eyes to new perspectives and deepened our connection. Our journey took us to places we had never imagined, both physically and culturally. Exploring the rich Latin American heritage in the Bay Area, particularly in San Francisco’s Mission District, was a unique experience since we are (part) Latin Americans too. Witnessing the harmonious melting of diverse cultures into a new one was both heartwarming and enlightening. This adventure has undoubtedly broadened our horizons. It has taught us valuable lessons about resilience, adaptability, and the power of human connection. Every step we took outside of our comfort zone was a step toward personal growth, and it’s safe to say that this journey has been a real game-changer for us, in the most positive way.

The chosen photo captures a poignant moment during my journey—a moment when I stood by the Bay, gazing out at the endless expanse of water. In that fleeting instant, I was struck by a profound realization: I had come a long way since the beginning of my time in the US. It was a moment of reflection and gratitude for the incredible experiences and personal growth that this adventure had brought into my life. The image symbolizes not just a physical journey but a deeply transformative one. It reminds me that the J-1 Cultural Exchange Program offered by Intrax was not just about teaching and living in a new country; it was about discovering a whole new version of myself.

In conclusion, my journey in the Bay Area through the J-1 Cultural Exchange Program has been nothing short of enriching. The opportunity to immerse myself in the unique culture of this melting pot, connect with amazing people, and embrace new perspectives has been a gift. I’m profoundly grateful for the chance provided by the J-1 Cultural Exchange Program, especially the unwavering support and professionalism of the Intrax team. Your dedication has made this adventure possible, and you are truly amazing. This experience has taught me that stepping out of one’s comfort zone can lead to the most rewarding and transformative experiences. It has opened doors to personal growth, cultural understanding, and a renewed outlook on life. As I reflect on my time in the US, I’m reminded that life’s most beautiful chapters are often the ones that take us by surprise, challenge us, and change us for the better. The J-1 Cultural Exchange Program has been one such chapter, and I will carry its lessons and memories with me for a lifetime.
