2025-2026 Program Fees
Protection for the unexpected
J-1 teachers must receive the same benefits and compensation as their American counterparts. This includes accident and health insurance, as well as any employer-paid or subsidized health insurance. J-1 teachers should enroll in their school insurance plan once they arrive in the U.S.
J-1 teachers are required to have insurance in effect for the duration of their program (from the start to the end date of their program as noted on their DS-2019). They will be required to provide Intrax with documentation confirming enrollment in their school insurance plan. Spouses and dependents are also required to be covered for the duration of the J-1program.
All Intrax sponsored teachers are enrolled in Intrax’s emergency medical & travel insurance for the first 90 days they are in the U.S. to bridge the gap until their school insurance is activated. To supplement their school provided insurance, all teachers are enrolled in an emergency evacuation and repatriation plan for the duration of their J-1 program. This is for J-1 program compliance only and does not replace the above insurance requirements.
Medical benefits
Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness
Repatriation
Repatriation of remains in the amount of $25,000
Evacuation
Expenses associated with the medical evacuation of exchange visitors to home country in the amount of $50,000
Deductibles
Deductibles not to exceed $500 per accident or illness

Potential Paycheck Deductions
These deductions will vary depending upon salary and school district and would be reflected in your current employment agreement.
We recommend that Exchange Teachers consult qualified school personnel and accounting professionals for tax advice. Actual payroll tax deductions will depend on your taxable income, tax filing status, and the state where you will reside.
- Federal income tax withholding (there are currently seven federal income tax rates and brackets: 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%): Taxable income and filing status determine which federal tax rates apply to your situation and how much in taxes you will owe. See Tax Withholding Estimator.
- State income tax withholding (different than federal income taxes; varies state to state; 0% to 13.3%): See State Tax Data for state-specific rates.
- Social Security and Medicare (FICA) (7.65% of gross pay): J-1 program teachers may be responsible for these taxes depending on their length of stay in the U.S.
- Union dues (variable): $50 - $100
- Pension plans (variable): $50 - $100
